Slower PHRF boats and all Double-handed boats start Monday. The double-handed fleets have long been treasured by the Pac Cup, and their number grows every year with 17 racing in 2024. The PHRF division starting Monday will be very competitive, including many race veterans.
John F. Clauser sat in the bar at Berkeley Yacht Club on the evening of October 3, sharing his woes with other Pac Cup veterans and fans. Something about his boom. Also, we all commiserated about the challenges of working with one or more ratings systems.
Business concluded we all went home to a peaceful sleep. John, however, we imagine, was awakened by the traditional 2am call from the Nobel Prize Committee. He had been awarded the prize in Physics for his foundational work in quantum entanglement.
On October 3, at Berkeley Yacht Club, a convivial band of PCYC members met and elected our new board, headed by Hawkeye King, who announced his own plan to race in the 2024 Pac Cup. The 2024 Race will start July 8, 2024.

Nearly three weeks since our bon voyage party and Skippers’ briefing at Richmond Yacht Club, we prepare to say our goodbyes and go our separate ways. Whether as a racer, a volunteer at KYC, a PCYC race official, or the Media Guy behind this keyboard it’s been a heck of a journey. Now it’s time to wrap up the 21st edition of this great yacht race.
With a large and diverse fleet of boats, coming up with a way to identify the “winner” is a significant challenge.
Most of us are moving a bit slower today after yesterday’s monumental push. With big waves and big breeze pushing competitors to Kaneohe at a rapid clip, many boats expected to finish on Tuesday ended up finishing on Monday. There was constant activity on the docks and along KYC’s famous bulkhead.
We have officially reached ‘arrival day’. After a slow and challenging start to this marathon ocean race, boats are coming in around the clock, and Kaneohe Yacht Club is filling up quickly. With the remnants of Hurricane Darby still affecting local weather conditions, weather has been breezy, rainy, and squally for our Sunday and Monday arrivals.
Nearly two weeks into the 2022 Pacific Cup, the docks are filling up as boats are arriving at Kaneohe Yacht Club at all hour. The bulk of the fleet however - specifically the smaller and earlier starters - is still at sea and lining up their final approaches to Oahu.
